Reign of Akbar

Akbar became Mughal emperor in 1556 and spent much of his long reign extending and consolidating imperial control across northern and central India. Military conquest was accompanied by revenue reform, provincial government and political alliances that brought Rajput and other regional elites into the imperial system.

His court became a major centre of architecture, translation, religious discussion and the arts of the book. Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri near Agra and supported an imperial workshop in which Persian and Indian painters collaborated on ambitious illustrated manuscripts and developed a recognisably Mughal style.

This phase is the most specific setting for fiction about Akbar’s household, Fatehpur Sikri, the royal atelier and the political culture of the later sixteenth-century Mughal court. Broader works covering several emperors should use the Mughal Empire parent instead.
