Mughal Empire

The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur in 1526 and developed under Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb into one of the major states of early modern Eurasia. Its rulers governed through military households, provincial administration, land-revenue systems and negotiated relationships with regional elites.

Mughal courts supported Persianate literature, architecture, gardens, manuscript painting and religious debate while linking India to Central Asian, Iranian, Indian Ocean and European networks. The empire’s political reach changed over time, and eighteenth-century regional powers increasingly exercised authority in its name or at its expense.

This context sits beneath Mughal India and British Raj and should be used for books that range across several reigns or treat Mughal institutions broadly. Novels centred on a single emperor or crisis should use a more specific child context where one exists.
