Historical person
Jahangir I
1569–1627
Jahangir, born Prince Salim, succeeded Akbar as Mughal emperor in 1605. His reign combined military campaigning, provincial administration and an elaborate court culture shaped by Persianate traditions and close attention to painting, natural history and imperial ceremony.
Political authority was shared and contested among the emperor, princes, nobles and the influential empress Nur Jahan. Jahangir’s memoirs record his interests and judgements, while European merchants and diplomats increasingly sought access to the Mughal court during his reign.
