Third Anglo-Burmese War

1885 CE

The Third Anglo-Burmese War began in November 1885 after disputes involving trade, diplomacy and the Burmese court. A British expedition advanced rapidly up the Irrawaddy and occupied Mandalay with limited conventional resistance.

King Thibaw was removed and Upper Burma annexed, but armed resistance continued for years through local leaders, former soldiers and groups labelled dacoits by colonial authorities.
