North-West Frontier Campaigns

After the annexation of Punjab, the British Indian frontier reached the mountainous districts adjoining Afghanistan. Tribal politics, punitive expeditions, fortified passes and concern about Russian influence produced recurring campaigns rather than a single continuous war.

British and Indian regiments operated in difficult terrain against Pashtun and other frontier communities whose alliances and objectives varied sharply. The campaigns became central to imperial military culture and to the mythology of the Great Game.
