The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre took place at Amritsar on 13 April 1919 during a period of intense opposition to the Rowlatt legislation. After the arrest and deportation of local leaders Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal, unrest and violence in the city were followed by the arrival of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer and restrictions on public assembly.
Thousands gathered in the enclosed Jallianwala Bagh during the Baisakhi festival. Dyer entered with troops and ordered them to fire without warning, killing and wounding hundreds. The massacre and the martial-law measures that followed became a defining crisis of the British Raj and a major turning point in Indian nationalist opinion.
