Penang Conference

In November 1910, Sun Yat-sen met supporters in Penang and appealed for funds for another revolutionary uprising against the Qing dynasty. Overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia had become essential to his movement, supplying money, printing networks and political contacts when repeated failures made support increasingly difficult to sustain.

The meeting helped finance the Huanghuagang uprising of 1911. Although that revolt failed, the wider revolutionary movement culminated later that year in the Xinhai Revolution and the collapse of imperial rule. The event demonstrates how political change in China depended partly on diasporic communities operating beyond the Qing state.

The House of Doors places its fictional narrator Lesley Hamlyn close to Sun Yat-sen and his Penang supporters. Her involvement links the private conventions of British colonial society to a revolutionary movement whose consequences extended far beyond Malaya.
