Cold War Hong Kong

After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Hong Kong became a British-controlled commercial and intelligence centre on China’s southern border. Refugees, capital and manufacturing transformed the colony while its government managed political pressure from both Communist and Nationalist organisations.

The city’s banking and trading networks connected China with international markets, but they also attracted espionage, sanctions evasion and political influence. Colonial stability depended on avoiding confrontation with Beijing while preserving confidence in the financial system.

Noble House compresses this environment into one week in 1963. Rival companies, British officials, Chinese business networks and foreign intelligence services compete while bank runs, market panic and natural disaster threaten the colony.
