The Numantine War formed the final phase of Rome’s long struggle against Celtiberian resistance in central Spain. Roman armies suffered repeated failures, disputed agreements and problems of discipline against Numantia, a relatively small fortified community whose endurance damaged Roman prestige.
Scipio Aemilianus received command in 134 BC and restored strict discipline before surrounding Numantia with fortifications. Starvation forced the city to surrender in 133 BC. Its destruction became both a symbol of Roman determination and a later image of resistance to conquest.
