Peisistratid Tyranny in Athens

Peisistratus established personal rule in Athens after repeated struggles with aristocratic rivals. His government retained many civic institutions while using wealth, alliances and mercenary support to secure authority.

After his death, Hippias and Hipparchus continued the dynasty. Their court attracted poets and performers, but the regime became more repressive after Hipparchus was assassinated.
