Final Ptolemaic Egypt and Cleopatra, 51–30 BCE

Cleopatra VII inherited a kingdom weakened by debt, dynastic rivalry and Roman intervention. Her alliances with Julius Caesar and later Mark Antony helped preserve her throne while drawing Egypt ever more deeply into Roman civil wars.

The conflict with Octavian culminated in the War of Actium, the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, and their deaths in 30 BCE. Egypt then became a Roman province under Octavian, later Augustus.

Egypt’s Sister imagines this transformation through Chava, a Jewish childhood friend of Cleopatra who is enslaved after their relationship breaks down. The fictional viewpoint allows court splendour, Roman power and personal loyalty to be measured against faith and freedom.
