Chisholm Trail Cattle Drives, 1867–1885

After the American Civil War, cattle drovers used the Chisholm Trail to move herds north from Texas through Indian Territory towards rail connections in Kansas. Long drives required coordinated crews, remounts, river crossings and protection against stampedes and theft.

The trail economy connected ranches to national markets but also crossed Indigenous lands and intensified disputes over grazing, transport and law enforcement. Its busiest period declined as railroads and fenced ranges changed the cattle industry.

Historical fiction uses the drives for stories of mobile labour, frontier crime and contested authority. The Chisholm Trail Bride follows a guarded young woman travelling with a drive towards Fort Worth.
