Flathead Indian Reservation and Agency

The Flathead Reservation in western Montana was home to Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai communities whose land and movement were increasingly constrained by federal policy and surrounding settlement.

Agents mediated rations, schools, policing and negotiations, often exercising broad authority with limited accountability. Missionaries and officials promoted agriculture and English education while Indigenous leaders defended community interests.
