Peter Ronan

Peter Ronan was an Irish-born American journalist and federal official who served as United States Indian agent on the Flathead Reservation in Montana from 1877 until his death in 1893. Before and during his public service he worked in newspapers and became closely involved in the political and social affairs of territorial Montana.

Ronan sometimes defended reservation boundaries and pressed the federal government to meet treaty obligations to the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille peoples, but he also enforced federal assimilation policies that restricted traditional ceremonies and imposed Indian courts and policing. His 1890 History of the Flathead Indians remains a substantial contemporary account, though it reflects the assumptions of the agency system in which he served.
