Starving Time at Jamestown, 1609–1610

The Starving Time was the devastating winter of 1609–1610 at Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in Virginia. A delayed supply mission, drought, disease, poor provisioning and worsening conflict with the Powhatan peoples left the colonists trapped inside the fort with rapidly diminishing food.

The crisis reduced the settlement from several hundred inhabitants to only a small surviving population by the spring of 1610. Accounts describe extreme hunger, social collapse and cannibalism, making the episode one of the starkest demonstrations of the vulnerability and violence of early English colonisation in North America.

Historical fiction set during the Starving Time often concentrates on ordinary settlers, servants and Indigenous communities rather than later heroic narratives about Jamestown. Lauren Groff’s The Vaster Wilds begins with a servant girl escaping the dying settlement and uses the episode as the foundation for a survival story about faith, empire and the contested American landscape.
