American Civil War Home Front, 1861–1865

The American Civil War transformed civilian life across the Union and Confederacy. Families endured separation, bereavement, shortages and displacement while farms, workshops, hospitals and households were reorganised around the demands of prolonged war.

The home front was politically divided and socially unequal. Enslaved people pursued freedom, women assumed new economic and medical responsibilities, and communities faced conscription, inflation, occupation and uncertainty about relatives serving far away.

Historical fiction can use letters, domestic labour and divided loyalties to show how military conflict entered ordinary homes. Barbara Hambly’s Homeland follows two women corresponding from Maine and Tennessee, allowing the war to be seen through friendship, art, family survival and sharply different regional experiences.
