Peruvian War of Independence

Peru remained one of the strongest centres of Spanish royalist power during the independence wars. Early uprisings were defeated, and Lima served as a base for campaigns against revolutionary movements elsewhere in South America.

José de San Martín’s expedition landed on the Peruvian coast in 1820 and entered Lima the following year, where independence was proclaimed. Royalist armies remained powerful in the interior until forces associated with Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre won the decisive campaigns of 1824. The final Spanish position at Callao surrendered in 1826.

The Wine-Dark Sea uses Peru’s emerging revolutionary politics as the destination of Stephen Maturin’s intelligence mission. Its fictional conspiracies reflect the real difficulty of coordinating local resistance, foreign volunteers and rival political ambitions against established royalist power.
