Capture of HMS Java
1812 CE
The American frigate USS Constitution met HMS Java off the Brazilian coast in December 1812. After a hard-fought action, Java was dismasted and forced to surrender.
The victory strengthened the reputation of the United States Navy and challenged British assumptions about single-ship superiority, even though Britain retained overwhelming strategic command of the sea.
Yankee Mission begins from the shock produced by Java’s capture and sends Kydd to restore confidence through a deliberate frigate challenge.
