British Secret War against Napoleon

1798–1815

Alongside open warfare, Britain developed clandestine networks against revolutionary and Napoleonic France. Agents gathered intelligence, maintained covert communications across the Channel, supported royalist and other anti-French networks and watched ports where invasion forces might assemble.

After Napoleon’s rise, secret-service money also supported propaganda, smuggling and political schemes intended to weaken French power. The clandestine struggle overlapped with diplomacy, naval operations and coalition warfare, making espionage and covert action a persistent feature of the conflict through Napoleon’s final defeat in 1815.
