The Storming of the Bastille took place on 14 July 1789, when a Paris crowd attacked the fortress-prison in search of arms and gunpowder. The Bastille held few prisoners, but it represented arbitrary royal power, secrecy, and state coercion. Its fall showed that the monarchy could no longer control events in the capital through fear alone.
