Battle of Ipsus
301 BCE
The Battle of Ipsus took place in 301 BC during the Wars of the Diadochi. Antigonus Monophthalmus and Demetrius faced a coalition of other successor rulers. Antigonus was killed, and his dream of reuniting Alexander’s empire collapsed.
Ipsus mattered because it confirmed the division of Alexander’s world into rival Hellenistic kingdoms. The battle showed that no single successor could easily restore the empire. It also shaped the political geography of the eastern Mediterranean for generations.
Ipsus is a strong entry for novels about the second generation of Alexander’s legacy. Christian Cameron’s Tyrant series is especially relevant to the successor world of shifting monarchies, mercenaries, and Greek cities caught between kings.
