Trial of Sextus Roscius

Sextus Roscius of Ameria was charged with murdering his father in 80 BC, during the aftermath of Sulla’s dictatorship. Cicero defended him in a case that turned on family accusation, confiscated property and the influence of men connected to the proscriptions.

The case mattered because it tested the political limits of advocacy after civil war. A murder prosecution could not be separated from the recent violence that had enriched Sulla’s supporters and left victims’ families vulnerable to legal manipulation.

Roman Blood uses the trial as the basis for Gordianus’s first major investigation with Cicero. The context is useful for fiction about court procedure, confiscation, fear under dictatorship and the way private property disputes became part of late-republican political violence.
