After their father’s death, Magdalen and Norah Vanstone discover that a flaw in their parents’ marriage has made them legally illegitimate and stripped them of their inheritance. Norah accepts the loss, but Magdalen turns to the stage, disguise and deception in an effort to recover the family fortune. Collins uses the sisters’ sharply different responses to expose the cruelty of Victorian inheritance law while building a plot of impersonation, manipulation and changing identity.
