The John Regan Trilogy follows a teenage Irish protagonist through the conspiracy, violence and aftermath of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The White Cockade introduces Regan and the mission inherited from his father; Witches’ Sabbath places him deeper inside the revolutionary crisis; and The Healing Blade brings his coming-of-age to a conclusion after the rebellion’s hopes have been tested by military defeat and betrayal.
Written for younger readers, the trilogy combines fast-moving adventure with a serious interest in why the United Irishmen challenged British rule and why revolutionary loyalties could divide neighbours and families. Regan’s growth from messenger and participant to a young man able to judge political claims for himself gives the three books a continuous emotional as well as historical arc.
