Phase
79–81 CE
Titus succeeded Vespasian in AD 79 after serving as his military and political partner. His brief reign continued the Flavian settlement established after the civil wars of AD 69.
The eruption of Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum and neighbouring settlements soon after his accession. A major fire later damaged Rome, while the Flavian Amphitheatre was formally opened with public games.
The reign provides the immediate political setting for fiction dealing with the eruption's aftermath, imperial relief, public spectacle and the transition between Vespasian and Domitian.
