Terence Newnes is a historical Western novelist whose work centres on the nineteenth-century American frontier. Born in southern India, he left college and spent much of the 1970s and 1980s working in fabrication shops, machine shops and tool rooms, with a period working in Ethiopia. In his forties he retrained as a medical transcriptionist and worked in Toledo, Ohio, before later establishing a call-centre and data-entry business. After losing the business during the COVID-19 pandemic, Newnes turned to the ambition he had held since childhood and began writing fiction. His historical novels favour traditional Western subjects: cattle ranching, homesteading, gunfighters, family feuds, Civil War veterans and communities struggling to establish themselves in the unsettled West.

His principal historical sequence is the Bailey Clan Westerns, a twenty-book family saga beginning with The Legend of Jack Donovan and continuing through The Bailey Brothers, The Making of a Man, The Marshal of Two Forks, The Hired Gun, The Man from the Mountains, The Rustlers of Animas Forks, The Battle for Silver Creek, The Kid from Mexico, The Bailey Clan, The Stranger, The Homesteader, The Harlan Kid, The Warrior, The Orphan, The Soldier, The Farmer, The Gambler, The Maverick and The War of the Clans. The novels range across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and other frontier regions, with many characters shaped by the American Civil War and its aftermath; The Farmer, for example, follows a former soldier trying to establish a Nebraska homestead after the war. Newnes also writes the Fast Gun Western series, including The Waco Kid, The Desert Born, To Tame a Town and The Drifter. His historical fiction is therefore primarily concerned with the post-Civil War American West, cattle country, frontier settlement, range conflict and the movement of families across the expanding United States.
