Gowrie Conspiracy

On 5 August 1600 James VI of Scotland visited Gowrie House in Perth after being approached by Alexander Ruthven with a story about a man carrying foreign gold. The visit ended in a violent confrontation in which Alexander and his brother John Ruthven, Earl of Gowrie, were killed.
The government declared that the Ruthvens had attempted to kidnap or murder the king, but the precise sequence of events and the brothers’ motives remained controversial. Contemporary politics, family grievances and the extraordinary circumstances generated competing explanations almost immediately.
The episode became one of the most debated mysteries of James VI’s Scottish reign and later provided historical novelists with a ready-made mixture of court politics, conspiracy and uncertainty.
