Once a formidable gunfighter, he intends to withdraw from the world, but his plans change when he encounters Nancy Kerrigan, whose land is threatened by men prepared to use fraud, intimidation and force.
The dispute forces him to confront the skills and identity he thought he had left behind. Against the sparse New Mexico frontier, the novel combines a struggle over property with a more personal reckoning: whether a man who believes he has little future can still choose what kind of person he will be, and whether protecting another person can give purpose to the time he has left.
