Matt Brennan becomes connected with the Two-Bar Ranch and is soon drawn into a dispute over grazing land and control of the surrounding range. What begins as competition between cattle interests escalates as intimidation, hired violence and local influence are used to force weaker operators from the country.
Brennan’s position makes neutrality impossible. The novel develops as a range-war story in which property rights are only as secure as the people willing to defend them, reflecting the conflicts that accompanied the concentration of cattle ownership and the arrival of smaller settlers in the late nineteenth-century West.
