Lance Kilkenny is drawn into a dispute between powerful cattle interests and smaller settlers whose claims threaten an established range hierarchy. Intimidation and murder are already pushing the valley toward open conflict, and Kilkenny’s reputation makes it difficult for him to stand aside once weaker ranchers begin to be driven from their land.
The struggle reflects the economics of the late nineteenth-century range wars, when access to grazing, water and political influence could determine whether a small holding survived. Kilkenny must identify who is directing the violence and prevent a private land dispute from becoming a wider war fought by hired guns.
