Set in 1244, The Sowers of the Thunder incorporates both the sack of Jerusalem and the disastrous Battle of La Forbie, following the Irish adventurer Cahal Ruadh O’Donnell through one of the decisive crises of the later Crusader era. Howard uses dust, cavalry shock and political fragmentation to convey a world in which Christian power in the Levant is visibly breaking under external pressure.
Baibars appears among the historical forces shaping the setting, while the catastrophe of La Forbie gives the story its larger historical weight.
