Book
Gates of Empire
Gates of Empire is set against the crusader intervention in Egypt, when King Amalric of Jerusalem and Shirkuh competed for influence in the weakening Fatimid state. Howard places an English adventurer amid war, diplomacy and urban turmoil as armies converge on Cairo and the future of Egypt becomes part of a wider struggle for power in the eastern Mediterranean.
The real political contest is central to the story: Crusader ambition, Fatimid fragility and the forces that would lead to Ayyubid rule shape the dangers faced by the fictional characters.
