Shalako Carlin is travelling alone through the desert country of the Southwest when he encounters a European hunting party that has entered Apache territory with little understanding of the danger. Among them is Irina, a young aristocratic woman whose composure impresses him even as the group’s leaders dismiss his warnings and trust too heavily in their own weapons and status.

When Apache warriors close in, Shalako stays to guide the party towards safety. The situation worsens after unreliable men abandon the group with supplies, leaving experienced soldiers and wealthy hunters dependent on a frontier outsider they had underestimated. The novel contrasts European ideas of rank and military confidence with the realities of travel in New Mexico and Sonora, where knowledge of water, terrain and Apache tactics becomes the difference between survival and destruction.
