Catlow

by Louis L’Amour

First published 1963

4.5(1,260)

Ben Cowan and Bijah Catlow have been friends since boyhood, but adulthood has put them on opposite sides of the law. Catlow has become an outlaw, while Cowan serves as a United States marshal. When Catlow heads into Mexico to attempt the biggest robbery of his career, Cowan is ordered to follow and arrest the man he still regards as a friend.

The pursuit becomes more complicated when Mexican soldiers, competing criminals and Rosita Calderon enter the story. Cowan is repeatedly forced to protect Catlow even while trying to bring him back across the border for trial. Their relationship turns the chase into a conflict between personal loyalty and public duty in the unsettled post-Civil-War borderlands.
