1919–1921
After the First World War and the Russian Revolution, the borders between the restored Polish state and the former Russian Empire remained unsettled. Polish and Bolshevik forces fought across a broad front from 1919 as each side pursued incompatible political and territorial aims.
The conflict expanded dramatically in 1920. A Polish offensive towards Kyiv was followed by a Red Army counter-attack that drove west towards Warsaw and appeared to threaten the survival of the Polish state and the wider post-war European settlement.
The Polish victory before Warsaw in August 1920 reversed the campaign, and the war ended with the Treaty of Riga in March 1921. Adam Zamoyski’s Warsaw 1920 concentrates on the decisive campaign and its international significance.
