Klemens von Metternich
1773–1859
Klemens von Metternich was an Austrian diplomat and statesman who became foreign minister in 1809 and later state chancellor. He played a central role in Austria’s changing relationship with Napoleon and in the diplomacy that brought the great powers together after Napoleon’s defeat.
At the Congress of Vienna Metternich was one of the principal architects of the post-Napoleonic settlement, and his name became closely associated with the conservative international order that followed. Adam Zamoyski discusses him extensively in Rites of Peace and Phantom Terror. Both works are nonfiction.
