England, 1651. Ralph Chaplin is a young Parliamentarian soldier in love with Katherine Fanshawe, an aristocratic Royalist whose family stands on the other side of the country’s divisions. He expects the campaign culminating at Worcester to settle the conflict, but battle gives him a personal enemy and leaves dangers that do not end when the armies disperse.
Ralph’s attempt to protect Katherine and his family forces him to reconsider the heroic ideas with which he entered the war. The second Highway Trilogy novel places its fictional relationships around the Battle of Worcester, showing how military defeat, pursuit and revenge could continue to shape lives long after the formal fighting was over.
