Rome, 1644. As the conclave elects a successor to Urban VIII, astrologer Mia Caiozzi and her physician fiancé Jacopo expect to begin their married life. The election of Innocent X instead pulls them into the politics of the Pamphilj family, especially when Mia is invited to serve the pope’s formidable sister-in-law Olimpia Maidalchini.

Mia’s new position becomes dangerous because Olimpia is determined to find Giulia Tofana. Protecting her mother places Mia at odds with powerful patrons and with Jacopo’s own obligations. The final Giulia Tofana novel uses the transition between papacies to bring the family story into the centre of Roman court politics, where private loyalty, professional ambition and survival are inseparable.
