The mission draws on the historical Venlo Incident, in which British intelligence officers pursuing supposed German opposition contacts were trapped by the Sicherheitsdienst. Ridpath combines deception, rival peace schemes and German resistance with suspicions surrounding the Duke of Windsor, making uncertainty about allegiance—not battlefield combat—the novel’s central danger.
