Gonville Bromhead
1845–1891
Gonville Bromhead was an officer of the 24th Regiment of Foot who was stationed at Rorke’s Drift during the opening invasion of Zululand in January 1879. After the defeat at Isandlwana, he and Royal Engineers officer John Chard organised the small garrison’s defence against a much larger Zulu force.
Bromhead fought throughout the night of 22–23 January and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He remained in the army after the campaign and later served in South Asia. In histories of Rorke’s Drift, including Ian Knight’s accounts, Bromhead’s documented role is separated from the simplified characterisations created by later popular retellings of the battle.
