Indonesian National Revolution

17 August 1945–27 December 1949

Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed Indonesian independence on 17 August 1945, two days after Japan announced its surrender. Republican forces then faced British occupation troops and returning Dutch authorities attempting to restore colonial rule in the former Netherlands East Indies.

The revolution combined guerrilla warfare, major Dutch military offensives, internal political conflict and international diplomacy. Increasing foreign pressure and military stalemate led the Netherlands to transfer sovereignty to the Republic of the United States of Indonesia on 27 December 1949.
