Tars reconstructs life in the Royal Navy during the decisive later years of the Seven Years’ War, beginning in 1758. Drawing on first-person material from sailors across different ranks, Tim Clayton follows men serving in a navy that had become one of Britain’s principal instruments of global war. Their experiences range from violent close-quarter engagements at sea to discipline, disease, pay, shore leave and the ordinary routines that sustained fighting ships.

The book connects those individual lives with the larger imperial conflict in which British naval victories helped reshape the balance of power in Europe and overseas. Rather than presenting the Royal Navy only through admirals and battles, Clayton uses the testimony of working sailors to show how strategic decisions were translated into daily labour and danger aboard ship during the war from which Britain emerged as the leading maritime power.
