Édouard Daladier
1884–1970
Édouard Daladier was a French Radical politician who served several terms as prime minister and was again head of government during the Czechoslovak crisis of 1938. He also held the defence portfolio and approached the confrontation with Germany aware that France’s military commitments to Czechoslovakia could lead rapidly to a European war.
Daladier attended the Munich Conference with Neville Chamberlain, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini and signed the agreement transferring the Sudetenland to Germany without Czechoslovak participation. He remained prime minister when France entered the Second World War in September 1939. David Boyle’s Munich 1938 treats Daladier as one of the four principal political leaders at the decisive conference.
