Blood Feud

Northumbria, 1067. Oslac of Acum is consumed by a feud with Gundulf’s Danes after the killing of his younger brother, but private revenge is interrupted by the arrival of a new political threat. William the Conqueror has appointed Copsi as earl in the north, and Oslac’s kinsman Osulf of Bamburgh calls his men to resist a ruler many Northumbrians regard as an outsider imposed by the Norman king.

Oslac must therefore postpone his blood feud and join a conflict whose stakes extend far beyond his own household. The historical struggle between Copsi and Osulf is woven into the fictional rivalry with Gundulf, allowing Bernardi to show the Norman conquest spreading into a region where local dynasties still possessed deep loyalties and military power. The novel begins the Rebellion series and establishes the northern resistance that continues through Uprising and The Reckoning.
