Battles of the Civil War

Battles of the Civil War is an eleven-volume military history sequence examining major engagements of the American Civil War, from the opening bombardment of Fort Sumter to the struggle for Atlanta. Each volume sets an individual battle or campaign within its strategic setting, introduces the principal commanders and forces, and follows the decisions that shaped the fighting on the ground.

Taken together, the books move across the Eastern, Western and Trans-Mississippi theatres, showing how the conflict developed from the improvised armies of 1861 into the large, destructive campaigns of 1863 and 1864. The series gives particular attention to command, terrain, casualties and the political consequences of battlefield success or failure.
