Gettysburg Campaign

After the Confederate victory at Chancellorsville, Robert E. Lee moved the Army of Northern Virginia through the Shenandoah Valley and across the Potomac into Pennsylvania. The invasion threatened Northern territory and drew the Army of the Potomac north under first Joseph Hooker and then George G. Meade.

The campaign culminated in the Battle of Gettysburg on 1–3 July 1863. After the Confederate defeat, Lee withdrew across the Potomac while Union forces pursued. The campaign ended the Confederacy’s most ambitious invasion of the North and became a major turning point in the war.
