James Willcocks
1857–1926
General Sir James Willcocks was a British Army officer whose career was spent largely in India and Africa. Commissioned in 1878, he served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, West Africa and the Second Boer War before holding senior commands in British India.
At the outbreak of the First World War Willcocks was appointed commander of the Indian Corps sent to France. He led the Lahore and Meerut divisions through the fighting of 1914 and the battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert and Loos before resigning his command in September 1915. He later served as Governor and military commander of Bermuda.
