Third Anglo-Afghan War
1919 CE
The Third Anglo-Afghan War began in May 1919 after Amanullah Khan came to the Afghan throne and sought full independence in foreign policy. Afghan forces crossed the frontier into British India, while British and Indian troops responded along the North-West Frontier.
The fighting was limited compared with the earlier Anglo-Afghan wars but included frontier battles, tribal mobilisation and the significant use of aircraft by British forces. Both sides faced logistical and political pressures after the strains of World War I.
The conflict ended with an armistice and the Treaty of Rawalpindi. Britain ceased to control Afghan foreign relations, giving the war an importance greater than its short military duration and marking a decisive change in the relationship between Afghanistan and the British Raj.
