London, 1868. Jack Lark has built a profitable new life in Whitechapel, but a clash with a powerful criminal leaves him wanted and forces him back toward the one institution that has repeatedly offered escape: the army. He joins the British expedition into Abyssinia, a vast logistical undertaking aimed at freeing European hostages held by Emperor Tewodros II at Magdala.
The march carries Jack hundreds of miles inland through difficult terrain before the campaign reaches Tewodros’s mountain stronghold. Against the background of the real 1868 expedition, the novel combines flight from the law with a military rescue mission, forcing Jack to confront whether the battlefield is a refuge from his past or simply another form of captivity.
