Christopher Wood
1901–1930
Christopher Wood studied in Paris in the 1920s and entered the international modernist circle around artists and patrons including Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau. His work combined simplified forms and intense colour with subjects drawn from Brittany, Cornwall and the sea.
Wood struggled with opium addiction and financial insecurity while trying to establish his career. In 1930, aged twenty-nine, he died after falling beneath a train at Salisbury. Sebastian Faulks makes him the first of the three biographical subjects in The Fatal Englishman.
